Why a Bridal Hair and Makeup Trial Is So Important: Sheen’s Journey to Her Dream Wedding Look
Your wedding day look should be more than beautiful. It should make you feel confident, comfortable, and completely yourself.
Every bride has a vision of how she wants to look on her wedding day. Some come with Pinterest boards filled with inspiration photos, while others have only a general idea of what they want. And that is perfectly fine! As a bridal hair and makeup artist, my job is not just to recreate a photo. It is to help you discover the version of yourself that makes you feel the most beautiful.
Today, I want to share Sheen’s bridal beauty journey and explain why I always recommend having a hair and makeup trial before your wedding day.

It All Starts With a Vision
When Sheen booked her bridal hair and makeup trial with me, she came prepared with inspiration photos of the look she wanted to achieve.
For her makeup, she was drawn to a soft, Korean-inspired glam look featuring luminous skin, rosy blush, delicately defined eyes, fluttery lashes, and glossy pink lips. It was feminine, romantic, and polished while still maintaining a fresh, radiant finish.
For her hair, Sheen initially wanted a half-up, half-down hairstyle inspired by Chinese aesthetics. Her reference featured intricate braiding, long flowing hair, decorative hair accessories, and beautiful pink ribbon details.

I loved that Sheen wanted her bridal look to reflect something personal to her. As a Filipino bride with Chinese ancestry, she wanted to incorporate elements inspired by her Chinese roots into her wedding look.
My goal was to honour her vision while helping her create a cohesive bridal look that suited her features, personal preferences, and wedding style.
A makeup trial is not just about recreating your inspiration photos. It is about working together to find what truly suits YOU.
During our trial, I listened to Sheen’s preferences and created the look she envisioned, while also offering professional recommendations along the way. I explained why certain adjustments could complement her features better and why I believed a more timeless and elegant approach would be more suitable for her wedding day.
Her original inspiration was beautiful, but I wanted to make sure her final look would complement her natural features, enhance her overall appearance, and suit the significance of the occasion.
I did not simply dismiss what she wanted. Instead, we worked together, making adjustments as we went.
That is what a trial should be: a collaboration between the bride and the artist.

What Should You Expect During Your Bridal Trial?
1. Constructive Criticism
Your makeup artist may recommend changing certain elements of your desired look, and that is a good thing!
Sometimes, a look that photographs beautifully on someone else may not translate exactly the same way on you. Your facial features, skin type, personal style, hairstyle, and wedding attire all play a role in creating your final bridal look.
Professional advice is not about telling you that your preferences are wrong. It is about helping you understand your options and making informed decisions together.
2. Suggestions That Suit You and Your Wedding
Your bridal look should work as a whole. Your makeup, hairstyle, wedding gown, accessories, and even the style of your ceremony should complement one another.
When Sheen later showed me her wedding gown, I noticed that it featured a Chinese-collar-inspired design. This gave me a better understanding of the overall look we wanted to achieve.

I suggested wearing her hair up because I felt it would complement the neckline of her gown beautifully and create a more refined, elegant silhouette.
This is one of the reasons I encourage my brides to share photos of their wedding dress, accessories, and overall wedding aesthetic with me. These details help me make recommendations that are tailored to YOU, rather than simply following a trend.
3. Room for Adjustments
One of the biggest advantages of having a trial is that it gives us time to identify what works and what needs improvement before the wedding day.
After completing Sheen’s trial, I encouraged her to wear her makeup throughout the day, ideally for around 8–12 hours, so we could assess its longevity and comfort.
I asked her to pay attention to a few things:
Did the makeup stay in place?
Did the foundation separate or become oily?
Did the eyeliner or mascara smudge?
Did anything feel uncomfortable?
Was there anything she wanted to change?
She later told me that her hair and makeup lasted throughout the day, although she noticed a little smudging underneath her eyes.
That feedback was incredibly useful! It gave me an opportunity to reassess the products and techniques used around her lower lash line and consider using less product or a different eyeliner formula on her wedding day.
These little adjustments can make a significant difference.
The purpose of a trial is not to get everything perfect in one sitting. It is to give us the opportunity to refine your look until we are happy with the result.
How to Make the Most of Your Bridal Hair and Makeup Trial
If you have a trial coming up, here are my recommendations to help you get the most out of your appointment.
Be Open to Suggestions
Come with your inspiration photos and ideas, but allow yourself to explore other possibilities.
Your artist may see opportunities to enhance your features or suggest a hairstyle that works better with your gown. Listen to the reasoning behind those recommendations, ask questions, and decide together what feels right for you.
Remember, the goal is not to change who you are. It is to bring out your best features in a way that feels authentic to you.
Be Honest About Your Expectations
If you prefer lighter coverage, more defined eyes, softer brows, or a particular hairstyle, tell your artist.
Equally, if something does not look or feel right, speak up!
We cannot read your mind, and we genuinely want to know how you feel about your look.
Your honest feedback helps us understand your preferences and make the right adjustments.
Communicate and Don't Be Shy
Your wedding day is one of the most photographed days of your life. You deserve to feel happy and confident with your appearance.
If you are not satisfied with something during your trial, please let your artist know. You are not being difficult, and you are not hurting our feelings by expressing your preferences respectfully.
A good artist will welcome constructive feedback and work with you to find a solution.
Wear Your Makeup for the Rest of the Day
If possible, schedule your trial on the same day as your pre-wedding photoshoot. This is a great way to make the most of your appointment and see how your look photographs in real life.
Otherwise, wear your makeup for the rest of the day and observe how it performs.
Your trial is an opportunity to assess not only how beautiful the makeup looks when you first leave the chair, but also how comfortable and long-lasting it is.
Share Your Wedding Gown and Accessories
Once you have your dress, share photos with your artist. Details such as the neckline, fabric, embellishments, veil, and jewellery can influence whether an updo, half-up hairstyle, or flowing waves will work best.
For Sheen, seeing her gown helped me confidently recommend an updo that would complement its Chinese-collar-inspired neckline.
Sometimes, one small detail can bring the entire bridal look together.
A Bridal Trial Is Not About Trying Ten Different Artists
I want to share something important with every bride planning her wedding.
A bridal hair and makeup trial is not necessarily about booking multiple artists, trying different looks with each one, and choosing whoever gives you the best result. Of course, if you have the budget and genuinely want to explore different artists before making your decision, that is entirely up to you.
However, I believe the greatest value of a trial comes when you approach it as a collaboration with the artist you have chosen.
You bring your vision, preferences, and inspiration. Your artist brings their experience, technical skills, creativity, and professional judgement.
Together, you work towards a look that makes you feel beautiful and confident.
When you have already chosen an artist whose work you love and whose approach aligns with your expectations, the trial becomes an opportunity to build trust, understand each other's preferences, and fine-tune the details.
And please remember: you are allowed to change your mind! Your trial is precisely the time to explore different options and make adjustments without the pressure of a wedding-day schedule.
As your artist, I want you to feel comfortable telling me what you love, what you are unsure about, and what you would like to change. We can keep refining the look until we find the right balance.
Sheen's Wedding Day: Trusting the Process
When Sheen's wedding day finally arrived, we revisited the adjustments we had discussed following her trial.
We talked about styling her hair up, and I once again explained why I strongly recommended this option. I believed it would complement her gown and create the timeless, elegant bridal look I envisioned for her.
However, I also made sure she understood that the final decision was hers.
At the end of the day, it is HER wedding. My role is to guide, recommend, and provide my professional opinion, while respecting her choices and ensuring she feels comfortable with the result.
Sheen trusted me, and we went ahead with the updo.
I refined her makeup and hairstyle to create a more polished, timeless bridal look that complemented her features and wedding gown.
Once I finished, I did not simply turn her towards the mirror and call it done.
I encouraged her to look at herself, walk around, and take a moment to get comfortable with the look. I wanted her to see how everything came together and have the opportunity to tell me if there was anything she wanted changed.
This is also why I prefer allowing around 2–3 hours for bridal hair and makeup preparation, depending on the agreed services and wedding-day schedule.
Brides deserve time to breathe, look at themselves properly, make any final requests, and enjoy the experience without feeling rushed.
The wedding morning can already be emotional and overwhelming. The last thing I want is for my brides to feel pressured into accepting a look simply because there is no time left to make adjustments.
And the best part?
Sheen absolutely loved her final look!

She was so happy with the result and told me how glad she was that she had trusted my recommendations.
For me, moments like these are what make being a bridal hair and makeup artist so rewarding.

A Little Love From Sheen
After her wedding, Sheen left me this lovely Google review:

Reading her words made me incredibly happy. Knowing that she felt beautiful, confident, and happy with her appearance meant so much to me.
Thank you, Sheen, for trusting me with such a special part of your wedding day. Thank you for being open to my suggestions and allowing us to work together to create a look that was uniquely yours.
You were beautiful, and I am so happy that you felt it, too!
Why Trusting Your Hair and Makeup Artist Matters
There is a reason you choose a professional to be part of your wedding day. Beyond applying makeup and styling hair, a bridal artist helps you navigate decisions, consider details you may not have thought about, and create a look that works for your individual features and the occasion.
Trust does not mean agreeing with every suggestion without question. It means having open communication, understanding the reasons behind professional recommendations, and feeling comfortable making decisions together.
Your artist should respect your preferences, listen to your concerns, and explain their recommendations clearly. You should also feel confident enough to speak up when something does not feel right.
When that trust and communication are there, the process becomes so much more enjoyable.
And remember, timeless bridal beauty does not mean that every bride should look the same. It means creating a look that complements you, suits your wedding, and allows you to look back at your photos years from now and still love what you see.
My Final Advice to Every Bride
If you are getting married soon, please consider booking a bridal hair and makeup trial with your chosen artist.
Bring your inspiration photos. Share your concerns. Tell us what you love and what you would like to avoid. Show us your dress when you have it, and be open to exploring ideas you may not have considered.
Most importantly, remember that your trial is a conversation, not an audition.
It is a chance for you and your artist to understand one another, test your ideas, identify what works, and make adjustments before your big day.
As a bridal hair and makeup artist, I am always happy to refine a look with my brides. My goal is not simply to recreate an inspiration photo. It is to help you walk down the aisle feeling beautiful, confident, and comfortable in your own skin.
Because when you feel good about the way you look, it shows in your smile, your confidence, and the way you carry yourself.
And that, to me, is what bridal beauty is all about.
Getting married in Melbourne? I'd love to help you create a bridal look that feels like you, only elevated. Let's work together to bring your vision to life!
With love,
